Coelacanths are living fossils, having hardly evolved over the course of 410 million years. They were once thought to be extinct, but were re-discovered scientifically in 1938.

Coelacanths are also special due to their fins. Most fish today are ray finned, but coelacanths are lobe-finned! They are more related to tetrapods (four-limbed animals like mammals, reptiles, and amphibians) than the vast array of other fish species. Lobe-fins are the start of what evolved into our arms and legs!
